Ministers back day of reflection on anniversary

-

A national day of reflection across the UK, to remember those who died during the coronavirus pandemic and support the bereaved, has been backed by the Scottish Government.

Taking place on March 23, a year on from when the UK first went into lockdown, there will be a national minute of silence at noon and people will be encouraged to shine a light from their doorsteps at 8pm.

Prominent buildings and landmarks throughout the UK will be illuminated, with the Kelpies, Wallace Monument and Ness Bridge among those in Scotland.

End of life charity Marie Curie is organising the event and is being backed by more than 100 organisations, including the emergency services, businesses, charities and community groups.

The Scottish Government is among those supporting the event and is inviting people to take part.

The Government is seeking further views on how to tackle violence against women and girls following an outpouring of experiences shared online in response to the Sarah Everard case.

The Home Office is reopening a public consultation which will help inform its tackling violence against women and girls strategy.

This is due to be published in the summer.

The initial call for evidence was open for 10 weeks between December 10 and February 19, and an online survey forming part of this has received more than 15,000 responses from across the UK.

The Government is seeking responses from anyone over 16, including people who have experienced violence, those who work with survivors and relevant professionals.

Among multiple areas of focus, it is understood officials are considering a proposal for legislation to protect women against public sexual harassment.
