Candles lit for doorstep tribute

-

Candles were lit on doorsteps and in windows in tribute to Sarah Everard on Saturday evening.

From the doorstep of 10 Downing Street to the homes of celebrities and activists, the 33-year-old was remembered. The simple act of lighting a candle had been promoted by the Reclaim These Streets group after inperson vigils in honour of Ms Everard and all women they described as “lost to violence” were cancelled amid coronavirus restrictions.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer and his wife Victoria were photographed holding a candle outside their home.

Labour MP Jess Phillips tweeted: “I am on my doorstep. Sad and angry and determined that our lives and our liberty have got to matter more than they do today. Tonight is for Sarah, her family and all who feel the loss.”

Scotland's Justice Secretary has praised Rangers and Celtic football clubs after both managers issued pleas for fans to stay at home ahead of an upcoming Old Firm game.

Thousands of Rangers fans breached lockdown rules on March 7 to celebrate the side's first league win in a decade, leading to worries the scenes could be repeated on March 21 at Celtic Park.

Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf and Sport Minister Mairi Gougeon held talks with both clubs on Friday, along with Police Scotland and Glasgow City Council. Now the managers of both clubs have called for fans to take in the fixture at home.

Posting on Twitter, Mr Yousaf said he was very pleased to see strong messages from both clubs urging fans to "obey rules and stay at home" for the game.
