We all have a part to play in recovery

As we emerge from lockdown, it is time to think about getting out to support and rediscover Scotland

-

The first steps to recovery, and edging towards the end of this nightmare, are beginning, cautiously.

Today the Stay at Home message changes to Stay Local. The travel restrictions remain but the move, however small, feels like a precious first step.

On Monday, hairdressers and barbers can reopen for pre-booked appointments, click and collect shopping will be permitted, and homeware shops and garden centres can welcome back customers.

All going well, Scotland is on course to ease restrictions further, with cafes, restaurants, shops and gyms due to open from April 26 and more people allowed to meet up outdoors.

We can look towards the summer being more normal than the ‘new normal’ and even allow ourselves to start thinking about a break beyond the garden. And boy, do we all need one.

Nothing is guaranteed but what seems certain is that any holidays this summer will be staycations as foreign travel remains a no-go.

Luckily, we already live in the best country in the world.

Today the Scotsman launches Rediscover Scotland, a campaign intended to highlight and celebrate the best Scotland has to offer as we emerge from the pandemic. Supporting businesses, big and small, the length and breadth of the nation who need our support now more than ever.

Along the way we hope to highlight the great offering on our doorstep, encourage readers to perhaps try something different and gather your recommendations for where to go, restrictions permitting, to enjoy our new found freedom.

The last year is one we would all rather forget but it is also one we went through together. As the country begins to open up, we all have a part to play in Scotland’s recovery .

With Scotland still without millions of international visitors, every penny counts in the tourism industry.

As Marc Crothall, chief executive of The Scottish Tourism Alliance, says today: "We encourage people to look at what is on their doorstep. There are lots of different, unique experiences you can have staying at home.”

While restrictions have not yet eased, there is a renewed sense of optimism this Easter that brighter days are ahead. So, when we can and are allowed, let’s all get out and rediscover Scotland.

All we need is the weather.
