Hamilton ‘gobsmacked’ by his stunning overhead kick goal

- By NEIL MCGLADE

Edinburgh City’s Lee Hamilton admits he is still smarting from the weekend’s Scottish Cup exit after his acrobatics ultimately proved in vain.

The defender's spectacular first-half overhead kick put the Citizens 2-1 up at Forfar Athletic and on course for the fourth round until Roberto Nditi's 94th-minute leveller forced extra time.

City skipper Craig Thomson then saw his spot-kick saved as the match went to penalties and the hosts squeezed through to set up a last-16 tie with Dundee United.

Any goals is rare and precious for Hamilton. So Saturday’s strike, only the fifth goal of his senior career, is one that will live long in his memory.

Hamilton's agility was awarded goal of the round on BBC'S Sportscene, but the 25-year-old insists it doesn't make up for crashing out of the competition.

Ahead of a return to League Two action tonight with the visit of Annan Athletic, Hamilton said: "I've never really tried

that in a game before.

“When you are younger you always try it with your pals but it just sat up nicely for me and the next thing I knew it was in the back of the net. I didn't really think about it but I was gobsmacked.

"I really just wish we'd held on because it would have been the winner and that bit more special on a personal level. But it wasn't to be. I've had a lot of texts about it and even some said ‘no way you've just scored a goal like that’ so that's lifted the mood.

"We've got to look at the bigger picture. We've been on a really good run and we still haven't been beaten in 90 minutes yet. We've got to pick up the three points tonight."

City are second, ten points behind leaders Queen's Park. But four straight victories under new manager Gary Naysmith since the restart has given them confidence and momentum. Hamilton believes the Spiders can be caught.

"We've still got Queen's Park to play twice, before and after split so if we can take six points off them it would put us right back in it," he said.

"The gaffer just keeps telling us to look at the next game and that is Annan. They'll be at us from the off but if we can keep playing the way we have been then I'm confident."
