@royalfamily tweeted: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle"

@ML6120 wrote: “Those left behind suffer the loss. Losing your partner after 70 years together will be stressful for the Queen.” @keo388 wrote: “Rest In Peace Your Royal Highness! You have been a pillar of strength for the Royal Family & the United Kingdom." @Bobbietravis wrote: “Very sad to hear. What an incredible man. We were honoured that he lived as long as he did.” @Austrobero added: “99, if only I can get to be 99 years old. No goodbyes! See you down the road.” @kityojames tweeted: “Sad day for the Royal House. May his soul rest in peace. We are thankful for his life. And his efforts towards making humanity better. We've each got one life. And he played his part.”

BBC One, ITV and other channels suspended normal programming after the Duke’s death was announced.

@scottygb wrote: “Coronation Street, Eastenders and Emmerdale won't air tonight. BBC One and BBC Two have now suspended all non-news programming for the rest of the day.”

@esh_98 tweeted: “Meanwhile, Channel 4 are still broadcasting Couples Come Dine With Me.” @Drnostromo asked: “Apparently BBC One and BBC Two have now suspended all non-news programming for the rest of the day because a 99-yearold man has died? Just how many times can you repeat that piece of news?” @Productionsjaw wrote: “This makes literally no sense. If you have a dedicated News channel then there’s no logical reason to be broadcasting the exact same thing on BBC One.”

@Rjwmartin noted: “And Two and the parliament channel and BBC Scotland and BBC Alba. It’s ridiculous.” @Mondasprod replied: “I think it’s for respect because regardless of our views on him, he is one of the most important people from the Royal Family and he’s done so much for the country as well as the commonwealth”
