Fiscal fury

Nicola Sturgeon has rejected an economic report from the Institute for Fiscal Studies that criticised her party’s manifesto spending pledges and predicted an independent Scotland would start with a higher deficit than the rest of the UK.

Burying her head in the sand and hoping her voters do the same. They are in total denial about the fiscal impact breaking up the United Kingdom would bring. Who in their right mind would want to invest in a country that will be taxed to the hilt? A mass exodus of businesses and youngsters will make Scotland a nation of poverty.

Cameron Thomson Blinkers on! If she doesn’t acknowledge it, it doesn’t exist. Why would we take the word of any independent analysis from a respected and specialised institution which challenges your longheld ideology?

Gordon Assur She is always right in her own mind. A dangerous individual driven by relentless personal ambition, who will stop at nothing to achieve her aim of separation.

In case you missed it, this is the SNP’S raison d’être – it was formed to bring about independence. All these years later here you are complaining that they exist. Where have you been for the last several decades?

Kathryn Mccardle

I see a leader focused on bringing independence to her country so that it can thrive and follow its chosen path.

Yvonne Mackay Why should independence bankrupt Scotland? It hasn’t bankrupted Ireland nor scores of other small independent states.

Brian Pugh

It shouldn’t bankrupt Scotland and yet even the SNPS own propaganda can’t come close to a credible economic case to support it. As for Ireland, are you for real? Ireland had to sell their souls to the EU, was forced to adopt the euro and had to be bailed out financially not so long ago.

Mike Scales

We shall see independence plans once we have voted in a Holyrood government that wants independence.

Valmai Anderson

I doubt if Sturgeon would benefit in an independent Scotland. I think the SNP would be voted out in the first election after independence.

But the most important thing for Scotland, Scots and Scotland’s future is getting independence and the sooner the better.

On your bike

A project to roll out secure on-street cycle parking across Edinburgh is set to be boosted with a further 1,200 spaces in the next two years in response to increasing demand. The new storgage containers have space for up to six bikes.

Another step on the way to bringing our city up to top European standards. Secure bike storage is essential if we are to encourage more cycling. One more bike equals one less car on our streets.

Henry Campbell Gillan Disgraceful. Another crazy idea by Edinburgh. Too many other urgent things needed in Edinburgh city before wee bike sheds. The streets and roads of Edinburgh are now a total shambles.

Anne Carty

More stuff littering the streets and taking up space. I feel for the blind people banging into stuff like this.

Janice Scott

They’ll need them to park the free bikes Nicola Surgeon is giving away.

Vic Weddell Now you’re taking up the spaces for seats, so we can’t rest when out walking. OK, get the car out and take my business out of town. Edinburgh doesn’t want us. Can Edinburgh Council please tell us how much these cost to buy and how much is the upkeep? Also how much will you charge to use? Fair’s fair, you charge car drivers for their parking, but you spend more on cyclists.

William Manson Why don't the council repair the streets and roads before throwing our money at these eyesores?

Bill Whyte

About time. Lots of people don’t know how much of a problem bike crime is, until their bike is stolen, it can be thousands if pounds. Bike crime is an organised crime activity. I'm not a cyclist but I understand and agree with the rationale behind it.

Chrissy Sutherland

Be nice and bright when the local "street artists" get their cans oot!

Jimmy Dobson What about multi-storey level bike parking? The Dutch use two levels to park their bikes securely in some places, which helps reduce the horizontal requirements.
