Queen’s Highway

-

A Tory MP has launched a campaign to rename the A1 the Queen's Highway to mark the monarch's Platinum Jubilee. Sir Edward Leigh told the Commons the "beautiful" Great North Road should be renamed after the Queen to celebrate her 75 years on the throne next year.

All public roads are already the Queen's Highway so it is a pointless exercise. She already has so many tributes with hospitals and schools named after her, why name a pothole-ridden road that has the status of a major artery yet is not even a dual carriageway for much of the journey between Newcastle and Edinburgh.

She’s the longest serving monarch and (in comparison to some who have held the role) has done an exemplary job. Some recognition, whether it’s the A1 or something else, would be a nice touch. Queensferry is, after all named after Queen Margaret, the English princess who married Malcolm Canmore, King of Scotland, and, as well as creating the ferry for Christian pilgrims, was generally praised for her good works.

Peter Lewis Thank you for sharing the colonialist view. Name it what you like on England’s side of the Border but until she accepts the title Queen Elizabeth I it will remain the A1 on our side.

Ni Holmes All for some kind of tribute, she has been a wonderful leader but I don’t think this is the right gesture.

Mark Wood Re-name the parts of the A1 north of Newcastle that are still single carriageway as a constant reminder of the disgrace of it.

Alan Chambers

No, but only because the SNP will want it renamed '”The Hen Broon Expressway” after the independence vote.

Ally Bell How about dualling the whole A1 and bringing the surface up to a good standard. Then we will call it the Queen's Highway.

Robert Wright I’ve got a better name: Wullie Wallace Way. You can take away our A1 but you can never take away our freedom!

Stephen Ellis Only if she does 100 laps of her garden and raises £32m for the NHS.

Damien Lindsay Don't think she would care and neither do I. A1 is easier

to roll off the tongue.

Jean Muir She wouldn't use it – she has a train!
