Strathclyde Sirens head south for double-header against nearest rivals

- By JOHN SCOTT

Strathclyde Sirens are hoping to continue their winning ways when they take on London Pulse and Leeds Rhinos this weekend.

With the Sirens sitting seventh in the Vitality Netball Superleague, it’s a clash of the mid-table teams at the London Copper Box arena today with Pulse placed eighth, while tomorrow’s opponents, the Rhinos, are sixth in the standings.

Fresh off the back of a 45-37 win against Severn Stars, the Sirens will be hoping to replicate last week’s exciting attacking performance which delivered their fifth victory of the season. With a six-hour journey from Glasgow today to take on Pulse in their home stadium, followed by a stern test against the Rhinos in the same venue tomorrow, the Sirens will look to utilise their strong squad to bring two wins back to Scotland.

Karen Atkinson, the club’s technical director, said: “This weekend is going to be a massive challenge for us, but one we are really looking forward to. We have a double-header against Pulse and Rhinos, the two teams that sit directly above and below us on the league table - so they will both be extremely competitive matches.

“To play Pulse on their home court on Saturday is exciting and we hope to keep stepping up our performances as we have been doing over the last few weeks and get another two wins on the board.”

Bethan Goodwin returns to the squad after the goal attack had to drop out of last week’s match due to exams.

Alongside Goodwin, the team will look to goal keeper Towera Vinkhumbo to continue her rich vein of form, with the Malawi internationalist topping the league stats for her performances over the past few months.
