Royal yacht

-

A new yacht named after the Duke of Edinburgh is reportedly to be commissioned 'within weeks'

I don't think Prince Philip would agree to that much money being used. We don't need boats to remind us of a good man; a nice garden like we did for the people’s princess Diana would be fine.

Pauline Oasgood

No! There are far more important ways to create employment and spend money. It’s like Boris's failed bridge in London that cost £53 million and never got past the design stages. Or his daft Irish Sea bridge idea.

Judith Mccullough

It would be interesting to know what the Queen and the senior royals think. Entangling the royal family in one of the government’s money wasting schemes doesn’t seem like a good longterm strategy.

Jane Elliott It's interesting how the government fishes with the statement of building a yacht for £200m and everyone snaps at the bait. It takes all the pressure off them for spending tens of billions on a failed track and trace system, that was enough money to pay for HS2 for example. It takes the pressure off them for all the cronyism and corruption.

Angelo Greig I suspect the Queen has little or no say in this, nor will it primarily be used by the Royal Family. Are they planning to wheel out a 95-year-old lady to sail around the world? Government ministers are more likely to be strutting their stuff on the world stage sailing around begging for trade from a string of bemused countries. We really are in the hands of a bunch of crazed fantasists and yet people still vote for them.

Iain Morrison Absolutely yes! Brilliant advert for UKPLC and will help to seal all those business deals that will in turn create jobs in the UK.

Ian Goodwin

Far more important to sort out things for ordinary folk, like all the rubbish cladding on houses and ferries that are going to be four years late for Scottish islands instead of wasting money on unnecessary status symbols.

Nancy Graham

They have enough money in overseas bank accounts to buy one outright. Why should the taxpayer cough up for it?

Graeme Robertson

Why can we not use one of the two lovely aircraft carriers recently built that are still waiting for aircraft? They could host fantastic trade events rather than sail aimlessly around the world's oceans.

John Winning

Absolutely not. If she wants a new boat she can buy it herself and the government can spend our tax money on something good like the NHS.

Helen Castle

An even bigger waste of money than the two unfinished ferries. £200m to build it and an even greater amount to run. Showboating to say the least. I wonder who would get the contract? Some private equity pal who would then sub it to a Korean yard.

Oliver Crane Yes I back a new yacht it’s also a floating British embassy that can be used to promote all things British. So yes, it’s needed, and in that respect will pay for itself many times over.

Jim Wier

After food banks disappear!

Barbaranne Knox

Just what hungry children need, a new royal yacht!

Ross call on Boris

Boris Johnson should resign if he is found to have broken the ministerial code, Scottish Conservatives leader Douglas Ross has said

Douglas Ross is one of the hardest working MPS for his constituents and they are very lucky to have him!

Susan Montgomery I doubt that Boris will listen to him!

Catherine Chisholm He knows full well that any wrongdoing by Johnson will be whitewashed.

SNP poll lead

Nicola Sturgeon says Thursday is 'not an independence referendum’

Sturgeon is belatedly attempting to win over voters by claiming that a vote for the SNP is not a vote for an independence referendum. If the SNP get a majority of seats it'll be a "cast iron mandate" for indyref2. 14 years of failure under the SNP is quite enough. Time for another party, or coalition of parties to run Scotland. We need a party or parties in charge who will make full use of our extensive devolved powers. The SNP don't want to make devolution work as it would reduce the calls for independence.
