Grant favourite to take the reins at Falkirk after departing Alloa

Peter Grant, who left his post with Alloa after their win over Dunfermlin­e on Friday night, has emerged as the favourite to take over at Falkirk and the move could happen quickly after the Bairns’ winless run was extended to five games with a 2-1 defeat at home to Montrose.

Conor Sammon put the hosts ahead after four minutes but just before the break Cammy Ballantyne flicked the ball over Kai Fotheringh­am and volleyed in via the inside of the post to level.

Lewis Milne struck the winner on 62 minutes, with the Gable Endies now two points behindfour­th-placed Falkirk with both sides playing their final game tomorrow night.

Visitors Airdrie beat hosts Cove Rangers 2-0 to secure a play-off spot with Calum Gallagher nodding the Diamonds ahead two minutes into the restart and Dean Ritchie wrapping up their success in injury time.

Forfar were officially relegated despite a battling 2-1 win at Peterhead. Danny Strachan’s own goal just before the hour put Forfar ahead, but Scott Brown fired the Blue Toon level only for Scott Shepherd to tap in the winner.

In League 2, Edinburgh City secured a play-off spot by beating visitors Elgin 2-0.

Josh Campbell put Edinburgh ahead before Liam Brown drilled in the second on 38 minutes.

Declan Byrne’s 93rd minute equaliser helped Stirling Albion remain in the promotion hunt as they drew 2-2 with visitors Stranraer.
