Muirhead’s team lose to Korea amid Covid scare in Calgary
Eve Muirhead refused to make excuses after her Scotland team suffered a first defeat at the LGT World Women’s Curling Championships in Canada on a day disrupted by a Covid scare.
The Scots, who won their opening three games against USA, Japan and Germany, lost 8-4 to Olympic finalists Korea.
Muirhead’s team were among those to have morning matches postponed as organisers took precautionary measures after members of the broadcast crew in the Calgary bubble tested positive for the virus. The Scots were due to have played China.
When the day’s play got underway Muirhead, Vicky Wright, Jen Dodds and Lauren Gray struggled from the off against Korea who had lost all four of their previous matches.
Forced to take a one at the opening end, the Scots conceded a two at the next and when the Koreans stole another shot at the third they were in control. They then registered a three at the fifth, after again forcing the Scots to take a single at the fourth to take a commanding 6-2 lead at the break and the concession was made when they maintained that advantage after nine ends.
“That was a tough game up against the Olympic silver medallists from Pyeongchang and we just never really got anything going,” Muirhead admitted.
“We didn’t find momentum like we had in previous games and it was tricky.
“Obviously with the Covid scare this morning in the TV crew it was slightly different in here, but we dealt with that really well this morning and prepared the same way for this game but just didn’t get the ball rolling.”
