face competition from Newcastle and Atalanta for summer signing target Danilho Doekhi.

The English and Italian topflight sides have registered a “serious interest” with the player’s club Vitesse Arnhem, according to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

The defender, who has just over 12 months remaining on his current deal and Norwich City and Fulham have also been linked with the Dutch youth international, whose form has helped Vitesse have one of the meanest defencrangers es in the Eredivise this campaign. Their 29 goals conceded from 31 games is second only to champions Ajax. Doekhi is a former Ajax B team star who initially rose through the youth ranks at Excelsior.

Rangers remain keen on the 22-year-old despite being well-stocked at centre-back with Connor Goldson, Filip Helander, Leon Balogun, Jack Simpson, loanee George Edmundson and long-term injury absentee Nikola Katic all signed up through next season. meanwhile, Rangers have opted against making Bongani Zungu’s loan deal from SC Amiens permanent, the French club has said.

The South African midfielder was centre of a protracted transfer deal last summer – which finally concluded with a move confirmed very late on transfer deadline day last October.

Rangers took the midfielder on loan with a view to buy – but they won’t be acting upon that option, according to French news site Courrier Picard.

Zungu, currently suspended for breaching coronavirus protocols, has now played his last game for the Scottish champions. The Bafana Bafana star was one of five players handed six-game bans by the Scottish Football Association – two of which were suspended.the midfielder started just four games for Rangers having been forced into two periods of Covid isolation after his move and following international duty – plus his rule breach quarantine. He will head back to Amiens where he signed a new one-year contract extension last summer, his French club coach Oswald Tanchot has confirmed. Zungu’s final appearance came in the final minute of last month’s 2-1 victory over Hibs at Ibrox.
