Here is how we're covering an election like no other

After weeks of a Scottish election campaign like no other – characterised by video calls, physical distancing and virtual huddles – polling day is finally here.

Voters will have the final say up until the polls close at 10pm. Then it will become a waiting game.

Unlike past elections, Covid restrictions have halted the traditional through-the-night counting of votes.

Instead counts have been scheduled to start from 9am across Scotland both tomorrow and Saturday, with the final regional list results not expected to be known until Saturday evening.

In these unprecedented times, The Scotsman will have every base covered on our website www.scotsman.com, bringing you the latest results, reaction and political analysis from across Scotland as it happens.

We will be running a live blog throughout where readers can learn every constituency result as it is declared.

And The Scotsman will host a special one-hour livestream from noon tomorrow where our expert team of political reporters will debate the key election issues. As the day goes on, we will feature a live interactive map on our site so readers can find out which party and which MSP has claimed the seat in their own neighbourhoods.

We will have reporters across the country bringing you behind-the-scenes detail and drama.

And the Saturday edition of The Scotsman will have all the expert analysis and political reaction you have come to expect, covering the fallout from the first full day of results.

More voters are registered to have their say in today's poll than any other Scottish Parliament election in history – and soon we’ll know answers to the burning questions. Will the SNP win enough seats to achieve a majority and be able to press home the advantage to hold a second independence referendum?

Will Alex Salmond’s new Alba Party gain a foothold in Holyrood? What will be the fate of Scottish Labour and the Scottish Conservatives under the new leadership.

With plenty at stake for Scotland’s future, we will have you covered for the answers.
