‘Lucky’ Chelsea lose but bag Euro place

-

Tuchel admitted Chelsea were lucky to reach the Champions League, despite losing 2-1 at Aston Villa on the the final day of the Premier League season.

Leicester's 4-2 defeat by Spurs meant they banked fourth spot by a point.

Bertrand Traore's first-half goal and Anwar El Ghazi's penalty put Villa 2-0 up before Ben Chilwell grabbed a consolation.

Cesar Azpilicueta was sent off as the Blues squeezed into the top four ahead of Saturday's Champions League final with Manchester City.

Tuchel said: "We are lucky Tottenham did the job for us. We came to win and to put any doubts to the side and it was not possible.”

"We need to adjust details and we need to be spot-on on Saturday if we are going to have a positive outcome.”

Sadio Mane's two goals ensured Liverpool delivered when it mattered as their 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace secured not only Champions League football but a surprise third-place finish.

Following their eighth victory in an unbeaten tenmatch run, Jurgen Klopp's side finished the campaign only five points behind second-placed Manchester United.

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers insisted he will not be leaving this summer after his side's season ended in Champions League heartbreak.

The Foxes led Spurs 2-1 with 14 minutes to go, with Jamie Vardy's two penalties either side of Harry Kane's leveller - having put the hosts in the ascendancy but Kasper Schmeichel's own goal was followed by two Gareth Bale strikes in the final few minutes.

Rodgers, inset, amid links to the vacant Spurs position, assured fans he will still be in his role next season.

"They have no worries about myself - I absolutely love it here at Leicester City," he said.

"I feel emotional now that we have just missed out but that motivates me even more to be here and to try to help the club and push them up towards that level.”

Sergio Aguero scored twice in a fairytale Etihad Stadium farewell as champions Manchester City thrashed Everton 5-0.

City's record goalscorer, who is leaving the club after next week's Champions League final, hit a quickthomas fire double having come off the bench with 25 minutes remaining.

His efforts added to earlier strikes by Kevin De Bruyne, Gabriel Jesus and Phil Foden.

Everton, who had gone into the game with a chance of qualifying for Europe, were completely overwhelmed on an emotional occasion in which City were presented with the Premier League trophy.

The visitors formed a guard of honour to greet City to the field and players from both sides then did likewise for Aguero.

Manchester United completed the Premier League season undefeated away from home as Juan Mata's penalty secured a 2-1 win at Wolves in the hosts' final match under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Nicolas Pepe scoried twice as Arsenal beat Brighton 2-0 but failed to qualify for Europe on the final day of the Premier League season as they needed both Spurs and Everton to drop points in order to finish in seventh place.

Elsewhere, there were victories for Newcastle, Leeds, Sheffield United and West Ham United.
