Prince Harry names baby after Queen and Diana
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced the arrival of their baby daughter, Lilibet ‘Lili’ Diana Mountbatten-windsor.
The name was chosen to honour the Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet, and Harry’s mother Princess Diana.
Meghan gave birth to her second child – a brother for two-year-old Archie Harrison Mountbattenwindsor – at 11.40am on Friday 4 June at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California.
Buckingham Palace said yesterday that the Queen, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had been informed of the happy news and that they are “delighted”.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are celebrating the arrival of their baby daughter, who they have named Lilibet ‘Lili’ Diana Mountbatten-windsor.
Thenamewaschosentohonour the Queen, whose family nicknameislilibet,andharry’s mother Princess Diana.
Meghan gave birth to her 7lb 11oz daughter, on Friday in California at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and both mother and child are healthy and well, Meghan's press secretary said.
She is the couple's second child, after Archie Harrison Mountbatten-windsor, who is aged two.
Astatementfromthecouple's press secretary said: "It is with great joy that Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet ‘Lili’ Diana Mountbatten-windsor, to the world.
"Lili was born on Friday, June 4 at 11.40am in the trusted care of the doctors and staff at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, California.
"She weighed 7lbs 11oz. Both mother and child are healthy and well, and settling in at home.
"Lili is named after her greatgrandmother,hermajestythe Queen,whosefamilynickname is Lilibet.
"Hermiddlename,diana,was chosen to honour her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales."the Duke and Duchess thank you for your warm wishes and prayers as they enjoy this special time as a family."
In a message of thanks from Meghan and Harry on the Archewell website they said: "On June 4, we were blessed with the arrival of our daughter, Lili. She is more than we could have ever imagined, and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we've felt from across the globe. Thank you for your continued kindness and support during this very special time for our family."
The Queen, the Prince of Walesandtheduchessofcornwall, and the Duke and Duchessofcambridgeare"delighted" with the news of the birth of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's daughter, Buckingham Palace said.
Charities close to the Duke of Sussex's heart were among the first to send their public congratulations on the birth of his daughter.
The Diana Award established in memory of his late mother Diana, Princess of Wales, and the Wellchild charity, of which Harryispatronwishedthecouple well.
Otherstosendtheirbestwishestoharryandmeghanincluded the Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Star Trek actor William Shatner.
The Diana Award, set up to
continue the legacy of Harry's beloved mother, tweeted: "Congratulations to The Duke and Duchess of Sussex on the birth of their daughter Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-windsor."
Mr Johnson wrote: "Many
congratulations to The Duke & Duchess of Sussex on the birth of their daughter."
Harry and Meghan spoke about expecting a girl in March during their tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey.
The baby is the most senior royal in the current line of successiontobebornoverseasand would be eligible to become president of the United States.
