It was announced that Colin Powell, the first Black United States Secretary of State, has died from complications after contracting Covid-19.
@tompahal said: “Due to Covid complications? Actual cause of death please, without the double speak?”
@nkonditi ventured: “For the loss of this giant, the world is poorer.”
@Djrichietea tweeted: “Typical of the BBC to make it Covid related yet omit the fact that he ‘had previously been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a blood cancer that weakens the body’s ability to fight infections’.”
@bondmomma replied: “It’s still Covid related. You can’t fit the entire article into the headline. That’s why you read the article.”
@evelynniessner added: “This is why we need boosters, especially for seniors.”
@nadinechandy rather grandly noted: “Descendant of Scots (and proud of it. Petitioned, got Scot Coat of Arms). Grandson of Jamaica. Warrior of America. Barrier breaker. Proof that America gives Best in Class. Rest in Power.”
@Ducksnfl wrote: “General Colin Powell, a loyal American, a great military leader & Patriot. Good bye, Sir.”
@Goonerrichb said: “He was in his eighties, numerous reasons as to why he died.”
#SOUTHEND
Prime minister Boris Johnson confirmed that Southend-on-sea would be given city status, in tribute to Sir David Amess, who championed a longstanding campaign for his constituency.
@Fraktalla asked: “Do they have a cathedral?”
@traflesg replied: “Cathedral cities are a thing. But the Queen can grant city status when she wants, as she has done for each Jubilee.”
@Cookinwithgrief wrote: “So it didn't deserve it whilst its MP was alive and campaigning for it but does when he's killed? What a weird system of governance.”
@Labforgov said: “Smacks of gesture politics, I’m afraid. Happy that Sir David’s campaign has been successful eventuall y, though.”
@carolynmwheel wrote: “A most fitting tribute from Her Majesty.”
@mellowshade said: “I feel sorry for all the people in Southend whose rent is about to go up because of this.”
