Husband giving his all after reigniting his spirit

-

The loss of Meharban Singh Jutlla’s beloved wife to ovarian cancer dented his spirit and left him bereft.

His wife, Baldev, was the ninth family member he had lost to cancerand he found that life with her gone was not the same.

“I found it so difficult without her,” says Jutlla, pictured below. “She suffered for two years but never shed a tear. She was very brave. I miss her.”

The death of his father many years earlier from blood cancer had triggered a drive to support good causes in Jutlla. But even that spark had gone out.

“My son and daughter asked why I was not doing charity work like I had before,” he recalls. “I realised I should do more.”

He decided to volunteer at a Cancer Research UK Race for Life event. Standing at Hyde Park Corner in London, cheering the runners on, reignited his spirit.

“When I saw the messages on everyone’s backs of why they were taking part, I was not alone anymore. It made me smile, and I have kept that smile since.”

Jutlla, 82, is now a regular volunteer at countless events. His support even led to him receiving an Honorary Fellowship from Cancer Research UK.

He has decided that his entire estate will go to the charities he supports – including Cancer Research UK.

The need is huge. One in two of us will get cancer and, overall, survival in Scotland is poorer than many other European countries.
