Boris Johnson has set out plans to ban MPS from working as paid consultants, in the wake of the row over former Tory MP Owen Paterson. In a letter to Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the Prime Minister said MPS should adopt a ban "as a matter of urgency".

@Sarahrosemary3 said: “His plans are two proposals which were made three years ago. What took him so long to put these before the House?”

@treflesg posted: “What about lobbying for free but then taking a job later? Is that OK? What about appearing on light TV and radio shows and then getting a job and media stature and later deals from that? Seems like we are saying business wrong but arts, media, books, lobby NGOS are all fine? Why?”

@jonloveridge83 commented: “As U-turns go, this one on Paterson and paid consultancy is about as U-turny as it’s possible to be. On the one hand, it’s good to listen, but on the other, what terrible, terrible judgment to ever be in that position.”

@Richard32893431 remarked: “Talk about after the horse has bolted.”

@Stonescriber observed: “Boris terrified by Labour plans. I expect massive loopholes where three buses can easily pass through.” @Jonkail1 added: “He needs to stop the rot, the stench is becoming overwhelming. I guess he hopes this will draw a line under it – but does this mean he throws his weight behind the Labour amendment?”

@jdensham2014 said: “Isn’t it time this tired format was binned?”

@Jire_1 posted: “I won’t watch it but I assume Madeley is gonna be doing a lot of trials.”

@Brucepearson2 commented: “At the going down of their careers, we will remember them.”

@sanders1_doug remarked: “Good luck to the rest being locked up with Richard Madeley. There will be a competition to get out first!”

@Kellymcevoy8 added: I am willing to sit through hours of tat for just a few moments of @teamginola on my screen.”
