The UK government was not properly prepared for a pandemic like Covid-19, a new report has found. A report by the National Audit Office said the government lacked detailed plans on shielding, job support schemes and school disruption. @pauladgoodwin said: “I don't think anyone was prepared apart from the Chinese. Admittedly we were slow on the uptake and a lot more could have been done once we recorded the first cases.”

@john6ckr posted: “They knew what was going on in Asia and had plenty of time to prepare if they wanted to save lives but callously they couldn’t be bothered and instead the policy was to ‘take it on the chin’.” @justinh72 joked: “Hands up. Who was ready? Not the toilet roll manufacturers for one.”

@bighairiecoo commented: “No-one was prepared but the UK government and Tories had a heads-up it was coming and did all they could to make a mess of it.” @squyrel remarked: £Boris didn’t believe there was a pandemic – remember him shaking hands with Covid patients to become one of them? What response do you expect from a government with a PM like that?” @fwd79 observed: “Literally no one was ready except maybe one or two far-east Asian countries who had SARS outbreaks.” @stevencurtisuk added: “There's no excuse, we had enough warning to close the border, yet it was still open with people freely coming in after the first lockdown, no tests or quarantine. We had three months to do that and it would have taken hours to implement.”

#KAMALAHARRIS

Joe Biden will briefly transfer power to Vice President Kamala Harris today as he undergoes a routine colonoscopy, making her the first woman to get US presidential powers. @b_sufc said: “This is a massive step towards equality. A woman finally being the most powerful person in the world.” @espiegler posted: “At last, for a few brief hours, we can say ‘Madame President’.” @alan_mackie warned: “I saw this in Designated Survivor and Angel Has Fallen. It didn't work out too well.”

@artbymartina added: “Finally a woman has some power… it had to be under this circumstance but we take what we can get.”
