City keep up chase as Conte earns first victory

- By DAVID OLIVER

Manchester City maintained their pursuit of Chelsea by mirroring the Blues’ scoreline with a 3-0 win over Rafa Benitez’s Everton.

Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva scored either side of a stunning strike from midfielder Rodri as Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions restored their second place in the English Premier League.

Chelsea remain three points ahead at the top after their three-goal win at Leicester on Saturday, with Liverpool one point behind in third on 25 points.

Guardiola hailed Sterling as “an important player” in the first half. He said: "It was really good, we're very pleased. The last times we play against Rafa Benitez at Newcastle, always we struggled. We were better today, we conceded few chances and were patient.”

Spurs were jeered off the pitch at the interval of their home match against Leeds United, with Antonio Conte’s side trailing 1-0 to Daniel James’ first half goal – however they were cheered off at full-time with a dramatic second half turnaround to win 2-1 and give the Italian his first win as manager.

Pierre-emile Hoejbjerg levelled just after the break and then Sergio Reguilon hit the winner with 20 minutes left to play.

"Before the game I was a bit afraid to know, after three weeks, the physical condition of the players and whether they were able to play the whole 90 minutes with the intensity of the second half," the Spurs manager told Sky Sports.

"I am pleased because in the second half we deserved to win. This is a point to start and I said this to my players.

"The players showed me a great will, a great desire to win this game.”
