The Brits have announced genderless categories for the first time in the awards’ 42-year history. The move comes after Sam Smith, who identifies as non-binary, was excluded from the gendered categories in this year’s ceremony which took place in May. Instead of Best Male and Best Female Artist, expect Artist of the Year and International Artist of the Year.
@Hexodecimal tweeted: “Brilliant. Instead of best male and female, one star will miss out.”
@prentontommy replied: “Exactly. See how they all feel about that.”
@Littledi70 added: “Used to like watching the Brit awards, I certainly won’t be watching them now.”
@grayruskin said: “More fool them, pandering to his greedy ego.”
@Brit9er said: “I love the bit where the Brit spokesman says they are evolving to ‘stay relevant’! They’ve not been relevant for 20 years. As for Stan Smith? Well yet again the idiotic organisations destroy the majority for a tiny fraction of offended wokesters.”
@obselete_units wrote: “Poor Sam Smith, unable to find a category that reflects their idea of theirself, how upsetting. Thank god everything has been altered so they will suffer no longer.”
@archersailor wrote: “Sam Smith is asking for a fair chance to be considered in awards, and conservatives are mad at them, be thankful, finally woman, men and NB will be the same in the awards field, the art will be the protagonist, not the genre of the artist, thank you Sam Smith”
@cathalhaughey02 tweeted: “Give it a year or two when Sam Smith pops off saying to bring back the two gender awards again as no female or non- binary artists has won an award.”
@lecanardnoir wrote: “Sam Smith and Will Young have got their way, being ‘non-binary ’ of course, of scrapping female categories in this music award.”
@snapdra wrote: “The way to achieve equality is to stop measuring difference. Ignore it better.”
@moviefeminist noted: “The Dutch film awards did this. Men won in all but one of the categories.”
@darksoutherner claimed: “Non-binary is just another word for narcissist.”
@duncanm said: “‘Smith, who is non-binary, missed out on a nomination at this year's awards.’ Maybe the album was just rubbish?”
