Coach Redpath ‘delighted’ as Marr edge Hawick to reach final

- By GARY HEATLY

Marr head coach Craig Redpath was pleased to see his side get over the line after they held on to defeat Hawick in their Tennent’s Premiership semifinal play-off on Saturday, setting up a final with Currie in the process.

The Troon outfit and the Greens, who finished second and third in the regular table, played out a close match at Fullarton Park last month – and this clash at the same venue was no different.

Both sides had scored penalties early on before a converted try by Hawick’s Stuart Graham had the visitors 10-3 up.

However, converted tries through Scott Bickerstaff and Ben Johnston turned things on their head and the hosts were 17-10 up at halftime.

That is how it stayed and Redpath said: “We’re delighted to get the win, that’s all that matters at the end of the day.

“It was a very good game in the first half and then in the second half we missed about four or five opportunities and fair play to Hawick who dug deep. It feels good to be through.”

Currie finished top of the regular season standings and they and fourth-placed Edinburgh Accies gave supporters a real treat, the former eventually coming out on top 38-26 in the other semi at Malleny Park.

“We expected a hard game from Accies, it was, after all, a semi-final,” Chieftains head coach Mark Cairns said.

“We’ve got quite a few things now to work on before the final.”

It has been announced that the final will be live streamed on the Scottish Rugby website this coming Saturday (3pm).

Meanwhile, there were eight National Youth Cup and Shield finals at BT Murrayfield and the DAM Health Stadium yesterday.

In the boy’s finals, Boroughmuir came out on top in the under-18 Cup, with GHA winning the under-16 final.

Gala Wanderers are the under-18 Shield champions, Kelso Harlequins taking home the under-16 silverware.

In the girls’ finals, Stirling County were at the double to win the under-18 and under-16 Cup events.

Dundee Rugby won the under-18 Shield, with Tayside Girls lifting the under-16 trophy.
