Weighing in

-

The majority of Scottish parents support the idea of their children being weighed in school, a new poll has found. The Obesity Action Scotland poll found 56 per cent of parents and carers supported the practice of weighing children in school, while 29 per cent opposed it.

I don't think it is necessary – they are still growing. It is not good to obsess over how much you weigh. It starts insecurities and body shaming, eating disorders etc They need to be happy with their own body and stop them from comparing with others.

Kelly Fleming I work with school-age children and we have sixyear-olds worrying they are fat, and ten-year-olds worrying about the calories and fat in their lunch. The SNP government has already brought in a really strict

Healthy Eating in Schools guide banning loads of things. Let children be children and invest more in outdoor play and PE.

Landess Robertson It happened when I was at primary school. It was always in private with the school nurse that came in to do the checks. Height and weight checked, letter to parents to let them know the measurements and that was the end of it. We weren’t told what our measurements were or what other kids were. Parents could then contact someone for support or advice if they had any concerns or they could just file the letter away and continue on with life. Both my kids went through it too and again they weren’t told anything and I received the letters.

Amy Napier Healthcare and social care is failing so let's get education to pick up the slack. If education was the single

most important factor, there would not be any overweight adults

Kay Wilson Talk about giving the kids body shaming issues, anxiety, eating disorders! Education should just concentrate on what they are supposed to be doing – most are struggling with that as it is.

Lisa Donoghue Maybe start educating the parents on diet and healthy eating. No point in shaming children when they don’t pay or provide the food they eat at home. Absolutely ridiculous idea.

Sarah Louise Weighing children in

school is stigmatising, body shaming and triggering. Eating disorders are a far bigger problem than childhood obesity.

Lorraine Gillies

Always got a medical when at school along with polio and BCG vaccines. Children were not obese in those days due to a better diet and hours of exercise outside. Strange then that the life expectancy of my generation is greater than any before and those coming after me. If parents are so concerned about this, take their mobiles off them, feed them better and get them outside playing.

David Black

A school's purpose is to instil an education into children, not to fat and body shame them.
