Law’s 50th cap a testament to her resilience over many years

- By GARY HEATLY

Sarah Law admits that there were times in recent years while she battled against injuries that she wondered if she would ever play rugby again, let alone earn 50 caps for Scotland.

However, on Sunday the 27-year-old stand-off from Penicuik, who first played for her country way back in 2013, made it to the half century when she came off the bench against France.

Scotland lost the Tiktok Women’s Six Nations match at Scotstoun 28-8 to remain winless in the competition after three rounds, but they won the second half 5-0 and certainly perked up in attack when Law, who now plays for Sale Sharks, came onto the field after 50 minutes.

Over the last nine years or so Law has had to fight back from a number of lay-offs, most notably being out for 11 months with a complex ankle issue between 2018 and 2019.

“There have definitely been some highs and some lows,”

Law reflects. “There probably were some moments when I didn’t think it would happen again, but it has been really special coming back each time after a setback and this Scotland squad is more together than we’ve ever been, stronger than we’ve ever been.

“It’s an honour to be part of it.

“During the tougher times there have been a lot of physios who have had a lot of input over the years and it was nice to get good luck messages from some of them at the weekend.

“I’m not sure if any of them would have thought I’d get to 50 caps either, but they helped me put in the hard work and it has paid off.

“And my family have been everything. They’ve been at just about every game since I started, not just playing for Scotland, but club games too.

“It was great to have them there on Sunday.”

Meanwhile, Scotland do not play again now until April 23 and head coach Bryan Easson says that time period should enable key forwards Jade Konkel and Leah Bartlett to be fit for the crucial Italy trip.

He said: “Both have little bumps, but neither are in a bad place, they will be fine for selection.”
