Tahir celebrates one of his ‘best moments in a Scotland shirt’

- By GARY HEATLY

Hamza Tahir declared Sunday’s last-gasp win over Oman as “one of the best moments I have had in a Scotland shirt”.

Now the spinner is keen to help Scotland’s men get another victory, this time over Papua New Guinea, today.

The Scots go into their third of four ICC Cricket World

Cup League 2 50-over-a-side clashes in Dubai off the back of two wins, but that only tells part of the story.

On Saturday, they eased past PNG by 162 runs before a much closer affair on Sunday.

The Scots looked down and out in the Dubai International Cricket Stadium when Oman needed just seven runs from the last nine balls of the match with three wickets in hand.

However, spinner Mark

Watt took a wicket and then there was a run out in the penultimate over before seamer Adrian Neill – thanks to an amazing catch from Tahir in the deep – took the final wicket in the last over as Scotland got home by four runs to sit third in the league table.

Tahir, 26, said after the game: “This is one of the best moments I have had in a Scotland shirt and one of the best wins.

“We are delighted with this result, the guys just dug in really hard. The effort with the ball and in the field in the second half was incredible.

The fielders really backed the bowlers up and to come through with the win is such an amazing feeling.

“We want to kick on now.” For the first time in his life, Muslim Tahir is on tour during Ramadan.

He is fasting on all but the four match days Scotland have during this trip.

“On game days I carry on as normal, but still try to eat less because when you are fasting your stomach shrinks,” he explains.

“On the other days I have not eaten, I have just had a couple of glasses of water.

“Spiritually, I feel really good.

“I am praying as much as I can.”

The game today starts at noon UK time.

The final match of the tour is then on Friday against Oman.
