Bottom-of-the-table Musselburgh earn vital win to breathe new life into their season

-

Musselburgh secured just their second Tennent’s Premiership victory of the season at Selkirk over the weekend.

The East Lothian men – with Craig Owenson, James Ferguson and Neil Mcnairn among the try scorers – picked up a crucial 32-20 bonus point triumph at Philiphaugh.

They are still bottom, but have breathed life into their campaign.

“This performance hasn’t just been in the works this season, it’s been building for the last three years,” Musselburgh head coach Derek O’riordan said. “We’ve struggled to win away from home and the effort put in by the boys today was exceptional.”

Last year’s champions Marr are well and truly back in the play-off hunt after their fourth win on the spin.

The Troon side defeated GHA with a bonus point at Fullarton Park, two converted tries by Fraser Grant putting them 14-8 up at half-time. Cameron Young and Ben Johnston tries gave Marr the bonus point by the 67th minute.

A Colin Sturgeon penalty and Scott Bickerstaff try rounded things off at 36-15 to the hosts.

Marr head coach Craig Redpath said. “We got the five points, played some good stuff andplayedsomeaveragestuff. I’m just delighted to get the five points. GHA are always stuffy against us.

“At times we looked good, but at times we did silly things which put ourselves under pressure. But all in all I’m feeling good.

“We need to keep working away. Every game from here on in is a cup final for us. We’ve got a big, tough game next weekend against Hawks.”

Gareth Welsh and Jae Linton were among the tries as unbeaten leaders Hawick sent out a message to the rest of the division with a 41-0 thumping of play-off contenders Edinburgh

Accies at Mansfield Park.

Currie Chieftains, in second, also secured a home bonus point win, but it was much tighter as they got the better of Heriot’s Blues 37-32. Ryan Southern, Ryan Stewart, Iain Sim, Cairn Ramsay and Cammy Meager scored tries for the Malleny Park men.

Two late tries, both converted by Finlay Scott, saw Jed-forest come from 32-19 down to beat Glasgow Hawks 33-32 in a thriller at Balgray.
