Luckless Magennis out for the season after fresh injury setback as Killie chase top six

- Anthony Brown

Kyle Magennis’ dire run of injury trouble has continued after Kilmarnock manager Derek Mcinnes confirmed the midfielder will be sidelined for the remainder of the season.

The 25-year-old moved to Rugby Park last summer looking for a fresh start after three injury-disrupted years at Hibernian in which he was restricted to just 26 starts and 49 appearances in total.

Having endured the frustration of each of his previous two campaigns ending prematurely, in September 2021 and February 2023, Magennis is now facing up to the realisation that he will not play again this term after undergoing surgery recently on a hamstring issue.

The former St Mirren player first suffered the injury at the end of September and then returned for one game in December but he has not played since.

Brad Lyons, who has been out since the end of December with a knee problem, is expected back in April, while Robbie Deas, who has been absent since the end of January with a fractured cheekbone, is nearing a return.

“Robbie Deas is out [for Saturday’s trip to Celtic], although he has been fitted now for a mask, so hopefully he can resume full training next week which is a real bonus,” Mcinnes said yesterday.

“Brad Lyons and Kyle Magennis are the two longer-term injuries, Brad we might get back before the split or round about it, but Kyle is out for the season.”

Mcinnes has told fourthplaced Kilmarnock - who have lost only one of their last 12 games in all competitions that they they must maintain their focus in order to ensure they secure a top-six spot in the cinch Premiership.

“With eight games to go before the split, it’s important we don’t feel as if we’ve already done enough to get into the top six,” he said.

“It’s the team that finds form now that will get there so it’s important we raise our levels and keep our shoulder to the wheel to try and drive the club into the top six.

“It would be a huge achievement from where we were two years ago and where we were last season.”
