Robinson: We still need to avoid the drop

- Ronnie Esplin

Stephen Robinson insists he is still looking at St Mirren's safety despite the Buddies being in good shape for a top-six finish.

The Saints are fifth in the cinch Premiership ahead of today's trip to basement side Livingston, with 22 points between them and second-bottom Ross County six points better off.

With eight league games remaining before the split confirms the top and bottom six, Saints are nine points ahead of seventhplaced Motherwell.

After the trip to Livingston, the Paisley side face third-bottom St Johnstone, County and then Aberdeen but the St Mirren boss remains cautious.

"Nothing is done," said he Northern Irishman. "First, we haven't secured our status in the division yet so we have to do that first and foremost.

"When we are mathematically safe we will accept that we are trying to get into the top six, when we are in the top six we will accept that we are trying to get into Europe.

"Until we are certain I will take nothing for granted. I know football can bite you on the bum very quickly.

"Yes, there is a gap but you can't get ahead of yourself. We have four fixtures coming up where we feel we can get points but only if you are on top of your game.

"From fifth position to the bottom there is nothing [in it]. There are fine lines and fine margins in winning football matches as I am sure David [Martindale] will feel.

"We have to be on top of them and make sure those fine margins are going our way. They have done in recent weeks and we have to continue that. It will be a tough game as always.”
