Marr defeat Currie to get home play-off

- Gary Heatly

Marr won at Currie Chieftains last night, meaning they will be at home when the sides meet in the Premiership play-offs on March 2.

In the first half the home team got off to a cracking start and DJ Innes scored an unconverted try. James Mccaig scored a second, before two Colin Sturgeon penalties made it 10-6 in a closely fought contest.

Innes’ second try, which was converted, followed by a seven-pointer by Marr made it 17-13 at half-time. The second half was cagier, but another Marr converted score made it 20-17.

Another try finished it at 27-17 to give Marr home advantage when they play each other again at the beginning of next month.

This afternoon there are two more Premiership matches.

Kelso will look to keep momentum up ahead of their play-off semi-final at Hawick when they take on ninth-placed Glasgow Hawks on the road at Balgray.

And seventh takes on eighth at Goldenacre with Heriot’s Blues eyeing up a fifth-place finish if they can get past Selkirk.

Meanwhile, the women’s Celtic Challenge has now split into two and Edinburgh and Glasgow Warriors are both in action today.

First up, in the top half of the table Edinburgh host leaders the Irish Wolfhounds at Hive Stadium knowing a win is necessary to keep their title challenge alive.

Scotland and Team GB sevens player Rhona Lloyd is on the Edinburgh bench and may debut and head coach Claire Cruikshank said: “This is another exciting challenge against a tough side that have gone unbeaten to date, so we’ll need to be at the top of our game in front of our fans.”

Coreen Grant has been released by Saracens and starts for Glasgow in the bottom half match against Welsh outfit Brython Thunder at Scotstoun.
