Edinburgh rue late lapses as Irish Wolfhounds fight back to share the spoils

- Gary Heatly

Edinburgh Rugby’s women were left to rue a sloppy last 10 minutes as the Irish Wolfhounds fought back for a draw at Hive Stadium in the Celtic Challenge on Saturday.

The hosts were leading by 14 points and had a bonus point in the bag just after the hour mark, before their game management and decision-making started to falter and the opposition took full advantage to level things at 26-26.

Converted tries in the 77th and 79th minutes gave the visitors the unlikely share of the spoils and left the majority of the 959-crowd stunned.

We are now into the play-off stages of the tournament and it all means, with one game a piece left, leaders Wolfhounds are on 27 points with edinburgh on 23, leaving the Irish outfit favourites to win the event.

The game was tied at 12-12 at half-time with edinburgh’ s tries

coming from emma orr (2) and Nicole Marlow converting one.

Edinburgh then went 26-12 ahead in the second half thanks to two converted tries from Cieron Bell and Alex Stewart.

Wol hound s replacement Djougangt hen scored a converted try, followed by one from winger Katie Corrigan.

Glasgow warriors are playing in the bottom half play-offs of the six-team competition and, later in the day, they lost out 24-17 to Brython Thunder from Wales at Scotstoun.

It means that, with one game left, glasgow are guaranteed to finish bottom of the standings and are winless, but they did pick up their first losing bonus point here. Claudia Mcdonald and Roma Fraser scored tries for glasgow with lucy mac rae kicking seven points.

In the men’s Premiership, a 33-10 bonus point win at Goldenacre for Heriot’s Blues over Selkirk means the Edinburgh side finish fifth in the table.

Kelso were already assured of fourth place and have a playoff semi-final to look forward to against Hawick on March 2, but they lost 17-15 at Glasgow Hawks.

Hawks led 5-3 against Kelso at Balgray and they managed to secure the win thanks to four second-half penalties by David Mccartney with the Borderers earning a losing bonus point.
