Glasner settles in quickly at Palace after Hodgson’s exit
It was a hectic day for Crystal Palace yesterday. Manager Roy Hodgson stepped down; ex-eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliverglasnerwasannounced as his replacement; and then the team were pegged back in a 1-1 draw at Everton that leaves them just five points above the relegation zone.
Glasner’s appointment was announced around tea-time.
The 49-year-old, who led Frankfurt to Europa League glory in 2022, has agreed a two-year deal with the Premier League club.
"Crystal Palace are pleased to confirm the appointment of Oliver Glasner as manager," said a club statement.
Hodgson's departure – which had been expected for a few days – was confirmed late afternoon, with Palace saying that the 76-year-old, who was hospitalised after falling ill during a training session last Thursday, was "out of hospital and doing well".
Eagles chairman Steve Parish said: "I'm delighted to welcome Oliver to the club. He has an outstanding record, and we believe he is the right manager to take the club forward at this pivotal stage.
"Wherever Oliver has gone so far in his managerial journey, success has been quick to follow, and we believe his ambition, as well as his exciting and attacking approach, is the perfect fit for getting the most from our talented young squad." Glasner led Frankfurt to their first European trophy in more than 40 years when winning the Europa League in his first season in charge of the club, beating Rangers in the final.
Frankfurt won the German Cup under Glasner the following season and reached the last 16 of the Champions League, while also qualifying for Europe again.
Glasner has previously managed Austrian sides SV Ried and LASK, who he guided from the second tier to the Champions League in four seasons, while he also secured Champions League football for Wolfsburg.
"I am very happy to join Crystal Palace," the Austrian said before taking his seat at Goodison Park. "I am looking forward to working with the talented squad, meeting the supporters and experiencing the Selhurst Park atmosphere I have heard so much about."
Hodgson admitted the time was right for him to resign. In a statement released by Palace, the veteran said: "This club is very special and means so much to me and has played a big part in my footballing life. I have fully enjoyed my time here across six seasons.
"However, I understand, given recent circumstances, it may be prudent at this time for the club to plan ahead, and therefore I have taken the decision to step aside so that the club can bring forward their plans for a new manager, as intended for this summer.”
Glasner almost watched his new team pick up a precious win at Everton last night after Jordan Ayew gave Palace the lead on 66 minutes, the Ghana forward thumping a superb strike into the far corner.
But the Toffees hit back late on to move out of the relegation zone on goal difference. Amadou Onana rose highest at a corner to head home an equaliser six minutes from time.
