◆ Trending: Five must-watch biopics about musicians and where to watch them

- David Hepburn

With Bob Marley: One Love in cinemas now, we're looking at other films focusing on famous musicians. Here are five of the best.

Rocketman: Dexter Fletcher's Elton John biopic is a classic jukebox musical that weaves the songs the star wrote with Bernie Taupin throughout the narrative. Taron Egerton oozes charisma in the lead role, while Richard Madden is suitably slimy as dodgy music manager John Reid.

Straight Outta Compton: Clocking in at a bumnumbing 147 minutes, it's remarkable that this account of the rise and fall of hip hop group N.W.A. doesn't outstay its welcome. This is partly down to the brutal depiction of life in 1980s California there's no sugar-coating here despite the involvement of group members, including Dr. Dre, in the production. There's also a superbly convincing cast.

Walk the Line: Reese Witherspoon deservedly won an Academy Award for her portrayal of country singer June Carter in this biography of Johnny Cash by James Mangold. The Man in Black himself is played with precision by Joaquin Phoenix and the two leads are utterly convincing.

Control: An account of the tragically short life of Ian Curtis, director Anton Corbijn's first film covered a subject close to his heart he worked with the singer's band Joy Division as a photographer. Sid and Nancy: Rarely has a destructive relationship been portrayed as well on screen as Alex Cox's film about the life of Sid Vicious. Gary Oldman shot to fame on the back of his pitch-perfect performance as the outrageous Sex Pistol's bassist - despite having twice turned down the role - while Chloe Webb is more than his match as equally-outrageous girlfriend Nancy Spungen.
