United and Rovers level at the top after Airdrieonians grab shock victory at Tannadice

- Mark Atkinson

Championship leaders Dundee United dropped more points as they were surprisingly defeated 2-0 at home by Airdrieonians last night.

Jim Goodwin's Tangerines are now only ahead in the league table from Raith Rovers on goal difference after the Diamonds left Tannadice with all three points.

After a goalless first half, Rhys Mccabe's men took the lead through Gabby Mcgill on 59 minutes and as United pushed for an equaliser, Airdrieonians made sure of the win four minutes into stoppage time when Josh O'connor netted. The win moves them up to sixth in the table.

Rovers are now level with United on 51 points, but with a vastly inferior goal difference following their 0-0 draw with in-form Greenock Morton at Stark's Park. Dougie Imrie's Ton have not lost since November 11 across all competitions and remain fourth in the league table.

They are a point behind third-placed Partick Thistle, who lost a seven-goal thriller 4-3 at Somerset Park against Ayr. Scott Brown's Honest Men went ahead through Nicholas Mcallister on 15 minutes, but the Jags made it 1-1 through Brian Graham on 33 minutes, However, Kurt Willoughby struck twice before the interval to put Ayr 3-1 up. Kris Doolan's men rallied and a Tom Adeloye strike and a Jack Sanders own goal made it 3-3, only for Harry Mchugh to net the winner on 84 minutes and move Ayr into fifth place.

Arbroath remain seven points adrift at the bottom of the table after they were thrashed 6-0 by Queen's Park at Hampden. Ruari Paton netted twice for Callum Davidson's Spiders, with Cillian Sheridan, Dom Thomas, Liam Mcleish and Stuart Mckinstry also on target.

The result allowed Queen's Park to leap into seventh place above both Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Dunfermline, who played out a goalless draw in the Highlands. Duncan Ferguson's hosts will lament a missed penalty from Billy Mckay on 18 minutes. Inverness are now ninth and in the relegation play-off position, two points behind eighthplaced Dunfermline.
