Kelly can see glimmer of hope for Livi

- Anthony Brown

Sean Kelly admitted Livingston deserve to be bottom of the cinch Premiership, but believes the “volatile” nature of the post-split fixtures gives them a glimmer of hope of beating the drop.

The Lions are seven points adrift of 11th-placed Ross County – who also have a game in hand – after winning just one of their past 20 league matches.

Kelly conceded they have simply not been good enough so far.

“I think there are times this season when you can pick out certain moments and certain games when people might think ‘Livi have done alright’ but in the main, the league table doesn’t lie,” said the defender ahead of today’s trip to 10th-placed St Johnstone.

“Performances as a whole, over the course of a full game, have ultimately not been good enough.”

Livi had the chance to move level with County if they had won last weekend’s showdown between the teams in Dingwall, but after losing to the Staggies and Motherwell over the past week, their chances of staying in the league diminished significantly.

Kelly believes that if they can close the gap over the next five matches before the split, they will give themselves some hope of getting off the bottom.

“I think the size of the task speaks for itself, it’s pretty obvious for all to see. It’s obviously going to be difficult,” he said. “We just need to take it a game it a time and look to close the gap as much as possible, especially going into the split because we know after the split, things can be quite volatile when you're playing the teams round about you. We just need to get a bit closer before the split comes.”
