Tear sparkles as Scotland ease past UAE

- Clive Wellington

Charlie Tear blasted Scotland to an eight-wicket Cricket World Cup League 2 victory over the United Arab Emirates in style as he completed an unbeaten half-century with a six in Dubai.

Chasing just 133 as they attempted to bounce back from Friday’s seven-wicket defeat by Canada, the Scots eased home with the minimum of fuss as they reached their target with 158 balls to spare.

Tear and George Munsey put on 42 for the first wicket before Munsey fell for a 26-ball 37, and the score had reached 127 when Brandon Mcmullen departed for 39.

Opener Tear, who finished on 54 not out, and skipper Richie Berrington, who made two from the four balls he faced, steered Scotland to 137 -2 in 23.4 overs.

Berrington had earlier put the UAE in and after Chris Greaves and Tear had combined to run out opener Muhammad Waseem in the second over, saw his bowlers reduce the opposition to 63 for five before an unbeaten 45 from Aayan Afzal Khan briefly steadied the ship. However, the respite was short-lived as Brad Currie took three for 21 and younger brother Scott two for 16 to dismiss the UAE for just 132 in 45 overs.

Elsewhere, Nathan Lyon took six for 65 to bowl out New Zealand as Australia completed a comprehensive 172-run victory in the first Test in Wellington.

Chasing 369, the hosts were dismissed for 196 before lunch on day four as Australia went 1-0 up in the two-match series.

Lyon ended up with 10 for 108 for the game while Camerongreenwasnamed player of the match after his unbeaten 174 in the first innings.
