Doig may go to Euros even if not selected

to all my career, so even to be put in a category with them is crazy,” said Doig. “I think I’ve earned it (his status) by playing through the age groups at Hibs and then coming over to Italy, but to be put in a category where I’m challenging those boys for a spot in the squad, it’s crazy.”

Doig revealed he is likely to be in Germany for the Euros regardless of whether he is selected by Clarke.

“My pals are going so I think I probably will try and get over even if I’m not in the squad,” he said. “I’m not sure I’ll travel with them though as that could get quite messy! I’ll be going, though, you can’t miss this.”

Doig is approaching the end of his second season in Serie A and is continuing to enjoy life in italy after joining relegation-threatened Sassuolo from fellow strugglers Verona in January for a fee in the region of £5 million.

“That’s me nine games in now and I’ve played every game apart from the last one when I was suspended,” he said.

“It’s the best lifestyle in Italy, I can’t complain about anything. Obviously the football’s been a bit up and down but I’m very happy in Italy. It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world. I’m staying in Modena and it’s absolutely stunning, it probably tops Verona, which is difficult to do.”

The Scots laid the foundations for their win over Kazakhstan with three first-half goals from Doig, Lyall Cameron and Tommy Conway, and Lewis Fiorini notched the fourth before the visitors hit back with a penalty.

They are now locked together on the 13-point mark with Spain and Belgium at the top of Group B after six matches.
