Docherty hails Cameron strike

- James Little

Dundee boss Tony Docherty raved about Lyall Cameron’s “outstanding” goal in his side’s 2-1 cinch Premiership win at St Johnstone.

The 21-year-old displayed incredible technique to open the scoring for the Dark Blues with an audacious effort from 40 yards. Dimitar Mitov’s failed clearance was rolled to Cameron by Amadou Bakayoko and the Dundee academy product drilled a perfectly-executed finish over the stranded Saints keeper into the empty net.

Midfielder Cameron was the best player on the pitch all afternoon, combining tenaciousness with technique, having scored for Scotland Under-21s in their 4-1 win against Kazakhstan last week. “Talk that goal up,” Docherty said. “I’ve seen it back, it doesn’t surprise me. He does it during the week, but to execute it on a pitch without a touch and to have the wherewithal to see where the goalie was was outstanding in a game devoid of quality from our point of view.

“For me it doesn’t surprise me with the wee man, he’s a talented boy. When I see it back, to have the awareness and to execute that technique is fantastic.”

St Johnstone were unfortunate to lose after a good performance, though, with Bakayoko scoring a late winner for Dundee after Adama Sidibeh had equalised with a brilliant acrobatic effort.

Saints boss Craig Levein was left scratching his head at the defeat as he was delighted with his side’s application.

“That’s our best defensive display for a while,” he said.

“The answer is to keep plugging away. If we play like that every week we’ll be fine.”
