Centre record for a Young Farmers’ calf at Dingwall

A new centre record price for a young farmer’s beast was achieved at this year’s overwinter­ing show and sale of 41 cattle at Dingwall and Highland Marts, Dingwall,

Triple the entries were forward this year and setting that new high price of £3600 was the pre-sale champion, a roan home-bred Limousin cross heifer from Adam MacKillop, Cairnglass, weighing 370kg. This heifer was knocked down to Kenny MacIver, who plans to show her on the North summer show circuit.

Bullocks (27) and heifers (14) averaged 325.0p and 389.6p respective­ly.

Judge David Murdo Wright found his runner-up in a Charolais cross heifer from Fergus Forbes, which was also awarded the best Charolais sired calf, and which Mr Wright went on to buy for £2200.

Fergus also won the best profit margin which was £860 for his heifer.

Bullocks sold to 372.0p and £1900 for the overall unhaltered champion, a 525kg Charolais cross from Callum Maciver, 9 Ordale,

Muir of Ord. Best daily live weight gain was awarded to a Limousin bullock from Aimee Campbell, which had gained 235kg from its purchase weight.

Carrie Hamilton was awarded the best stock person on the day.

Home-bred haltered bullock – 1 and home-bred reserve, Duncan Munro, £1450; 2, Rachel Forbes, £1600.

Home-bred haltered heifer – 1, homebred champion and overall champion, Adam MacKillop, £3600; 2, Ellie Mann, £1150.

Home-bred unhaltered bullock – 1, Stephanie Anderson, £1700.

Best stock person – Carrie Hamilton.

Best daily live weight gain – Amiee Campbell.

Best profit margin – 1, Fergus Forbes; 2, Carrie Hamilton; 3, Esther Grant.
