3 ways to beat… EYE BAGS

-

PREVENT:

Under-eye bags are caused when the thick membrane that holds back the fat under the eye socket begins to weaken and the fat bulges forward. Unfortunately a genetic predisposition is the single biggest cause, but their appearance can be exacerbated by fluid retention (oedema) in these delicate tissues. This is basically down to poor circulation, but lack of sleep, a poor diet and drinking alcohol will all contribute. Using a daily SPF on the face and avoiding smoking may keep them at bay for longer.

TREAT:

There is a plethora of under-eye creams on the market which may offer a tightening effect or contain peptides, antioxidants and retinol which help to reduce inflammation, puffiness and revive the under-eye area. But effects will be subtle. Lower lid blepharoplasty (which costs from about £3,000) can offer a permanent solution. Small incisions are made in the inside membrane of the lower lid and some of the fat under the eye is removed, with the remaining fat spread around to fill out the eye socket so the patient isn’t left with a hollow, sunken look. Tear trough fillers, which are injected into the gap between the eye bag and cheek, can improve the appearance of eye bags for some.

DON’T BOTHER:

Drinking lots of water is often touted as a wonder cure for under eye bags – but there is no scientific evidence to demonstrate that this has any effect on shifting them. Cucumbers on the eyes may be a classic remedy but any medical benefits are sadly a myth. You can get the same wonderful cooling effect by using a cold flannel.
