Clive: My roving eye...and why I am embarrassed to still be alive!

- By Sanchez Manning

CLIVE JAMES has joked how he is ‘highly embarrassed’ to still be alive two years after being told he had terminal cancer – and how his ‘roving eye’ wrecked his marriage.

The broadcaster and writer was thrown out of the family home four years ago after wife Prue found out he was seeing an ex-model 24 years his junior. Two years later he was diagnosed with leukaemia.

But in James’s own words, he is ‘still here’ – thanks to experimental treatments – and his wife seems to have given him a second chance.

He tells today’s Mail on Sunday Event magazine: ‘I’ve made every possible mistake, but I’m still here, still married, which is incredible.’

The 76-year-old reveals how throughout his illness his wife – they wed in 1968 – has been a constant support. And he recalls: ‘When I first knew her, she was the most beautiful girl in the world.

‘A long time has gone by and she still is. Things got bad because I wanted to feel that way about every other beautiful girl.’
