Button delights in another memorable Hungary run

- By Joseph Downes

IF Lewis Hamilton was disappointed after qualifying second for the Hungarian Grand Prix, compatriot Jenson Button was delighted with eighth.

McLaren teammate Fernando Alonso starts seventh after both made it through to the final part of qualifying — a first for the team since Honda started providing their engines last season.

‘The car was working well,’ said Button. ‘We’re in front of all the cars we should be racing.

‘Last year we were not great here but it was still one of our better races. This year we should be better, it’s a circuit that suits us.’

The McLaren car enjoys the less power-dependent Hungaroring and so does Button.

He claimed his first win in the sport at this race 10 years ago and another followed in 2011.

‘I like it a lot,’ said Button. ‘It’s such a fun race, one of those exciting races that’s been on for years. There’s a lot of history, especially for me winning two Grands Prix.’

The 2006 victory provided one the sport’s enduring images as Button lifted his visor to reveal his wide-eyed delight. He celebrated with his late father, John.

‘Lots of very special memories,’ said Button, ‘and not just racing memories.’
