‘Hard but fair’: Baltusrol’s fraught fourth hole
HOLE 4 — The Famous Fourth
196 yards, par three Baltusrol’s signature hole, a brutally hard par three over nothing but water. When the hole was redesigned by Robert Trent Jones in 1952, critics claimed the changes had made it far too difficult. Trent Jones, the story goes, took a group of those critics to his new tee to play it, duly aced it with a four iron, and said: ‘Gentlemen, as you can see, the hole is eminently fair.’
