Nadiya: How did I lose 3 stone? By keeping away from Mum!

- By Michael Powell

SHE created some of the most stunning treats ever seen on her way to winning the Great British Bake Off last year.

But Nadiya Hussain has revealed that she hardly ever eats her own cakes – after having to shed more than 3st.

The 31-year-old piled the pounds on to her tiny 5ft frame following the birth of her third child, Maryam, who is now aged five.

In an exclusive interview in The Mail on Sunday’s You magazine today, Nadiya says: ‘I’d say to my husband Abdal, “Am I fat?” And he’d say, “No, you’re not, you’re beautiful,” but I knew things weren’t right.

‘One day I looked at a photo of myself and I thought, “I need to overhaul my life!”’

Nadiya says she rang her ‘foodmad’ mother and told her she could not visit for three months, just so that she could avoid eating her calorific curries.

She also bought a buggy, put Maryam in it ‘with food, juice and crayons’, and started running up to ten miles a day.

Three months later, Nadiya – by now more than 3st lighter – felt confident enough to visit her mother once more.

The star says: ‘When I go for something I do it in a big way. It was the first thing I’d done for myself since having the kids. And that was it – suddenly I felt I could do anything.’

After winning the Bake Off last year in front of 15million viewers, Nadiya is about to publish her second cookbook, Bake Me A Story, which she says was inspired by her children. The book mixes fairytale stories with cake recipes.
