Rodgers insists he is not freezing out goalkeeper Gordon for good after de Vries makes debut
BRENDAN RODGERS last night insisted that Craig Gordon still has a future at Celtic, despite dropping the goalkeeper for yesterday’s Premiership clash against Aberdeen. The Parkhead boss selected Dorus de Vries (left) to play in goal and the Dutchman enjoyed his debut, a 4-1 victory which took the Hoops to the top of the Premiership table. Rodgers previously managed the 35-year-old at Swansea City and insists de Vries has gained an edge because he has a deep knowledge of his philosophy on the game. ‘In every game I put out what I think is the best team,’ said Rodgers. ‘My keeper is no different to any outfield players. ‘Dorus de Vries knows inside out how I want to work and I’m sure Craig will get another opportunity again. Whether it comes in the next game, or after, he will be better for this week.
‘I’ve got good goalkeepers now at the club, and one in particular who understands how I work. I think you can see Dorus’ control gives comfort to the players around him.’
Rodgers hopes to add at least one player before Wednesday’s transfer deadline, with a central midfielder and right-back the priority areas.
A loan move for Everton’s James McCarthy has been mooted to add to the midfield options, although club sources last night denied a deal for the Everton midfielder is imminent. Celtic have also been persistently linked with Liverpool’s out of favour right-back Andre Wisdom, who played under Rodgers at Anfield.
‘If I don’t make another signing, the club has done brilliantly for us in terms of the market,’ added Rodgers. ‘However, I would like to bring in some more to help the team.’
