BAKING a cake is a tasty way to raise money for a favourite charity – you spend just a few pounds on ingredients to make cakes which can then be sold for a healthy profit with proceeds going to good causes.

Thanks to the popularity of television shows such as The Great British Bake Off starring cookery writer Mary Berry – for now – the sales of baking ingredients have risen more than 60 per cent over the past decade.

A growing number of people realise that a cake costing £10 in the shops can be made for less than £2 – and offers a rewarding pursuit that can also prove good value for charities.

The charity Macmillan Cancer Support is running the ‘world’s biggest coffee morning’ on Friday

– inviting people to host events and providing free advice and suggestions with tips on cakebaking.

Last year, the event raised more than £25million for the charity.

Nichola Winner, 32, from Aveley, Essex, loves baking cakes for friends and family – plus selling them to raise funds for favourite charities.

The building society customer services manager often gets help from her son Teddy, six. Nichola also has a one-year-old daughter Amelia with partner Edward Boenke.

She says: ‘Anyone can bake cakes – just roll up your sleeves and give it a go and you might be surprised at just how much fun it can be. The secret for charity sales is in the presentation.

‘One of my favourites is cake-pops – they look a bit like lollipops but are made of cake and you can make some great decorations with icing and edible glitter.’

Having had family members and friends with cancer, Nichola is keen to get involved in the Macmillan coffee morning day later this month.

She believes that by spending less than £10 on ingredients, she can easily turn this into more than £50 in sales to be handed over to help the charity.

But cakes can be baked for any charity or good cause – with table top sales at offices, schools and fundraisers the most popular ways to generate money.
