Ayr curse keeper Quinn

- By Ewing Grahame

LEAGUE TWO strugglers Clyde earned a replay against Championship side Ayr, largely due to a superb debut by 18-year-old Connor Quinn in the visitors’ goal.

Signed on Friday after being released by Livingston, Quinn replaced the suspended John Gibson and kept his side in today’s draw for the Scottish Cup quarter-finals, with a series of crucial stops.

He made five superb first-half saves to keep his team in it, denying Declan McDaid twice and foiling Gary Harkins and Craig McGuffie, although McDaid should have buried a third chance but drove his shot right at Quinn.

Nicky Devlin also saw his shot from 20 yards hit the inside of Quinn’s left-hand post and bounce along the line to strike the other upright before being cleared.

Clyde seized the lead ten minutes after the break when former Ayr forward David Gormley swept the ball home from inside the box.

Paul Cairney fired in the equaliser after 70 minutes only for Quinn to save his netbound effort near the end.

‘Overall, I’m delighted, especially for Connor,’ said Clyde manager Barry Ferguson. ‘He’s a confident young boy and I like that.’

Ayr boss Ian McCall said: ‘I’m pleased that we came back from a goal down but the tie should have been over by half-time. At least we’re still in the hat.’
