BRITAIN’S ‘BUNGED UP’
BRITAIN is constipated and bloated, a new survey into digestive health has found.
The survey of more than 59,000 18- to 55-year-olds found that two-thirds suffered bloating after eating, with a quarter of women complaining of irritable bowel syndrome.
More than 80 per cent admitted that they do not have a daily satisfactory bowel movement.
Just 14 per cent of respondents considered themselves at optimal digestive health. These were the ones who reported eating the most nuts and seeds, fruit, oily fish and vegetables as part of their diet.
Those who had digestive problems had a significantly higher consumption of red meat, sugar, salt, wheat and dairy.
The survey was carried out over 15 years by nutritionist Patrick Holford, who has written a new book called Improve Your Digestion.
