Q I have a ‘Winter Beauty’ clematis at the front of my house, facing east. It produces lots of growth but fails to make any flowers. What can I do? Brian Smith

A ‘Winter Beauty’ prefers a warm, sheltered position, so I wonder if yours is too exposed to the elements? It also prefers consistently damp soil, so improving the ground’s ability to hold on to moisture will ensure it is put under less stress. Pruning is best carried out after flowering, cutting to keep the plant within bounds – feed and water well once you’ve finished.

Q Can I grow aloe vera in the UK? Frances Withers

A Aloe vera is a succulent plant with sap that’s used in skincare products. Plants are widely available from garden centres and online suppliers, and should be planted in well-drained cactus compost. They need a warm, light, sunny spot indoors for much of the year, although they can be displayed outdoors in summer.
