McGhee concedes his job is on the line
MARK McGHEE last night admitted that he is now under serious pressure as Motherwell manager after his team were destroyed by Dundee at Fir Park.
His side were 5-1 down at half-time, prompting a section of supporters to leave the stadium and call for the removal of their beleaguered manager during a heated protest.
Motherwell went on to lose the game by that scoreline, hot on the heels of a 7-2 thrashing at Pittodrie, with McGhee acknowledging that the club is now in a relegation battle.
‘I’m not arrogant enough to think that I’m immortal,’ said the Scotland No 2. ‘Losing 7-2 at Aberdeen, then 5-1 at home to Dundee just a couple of games later... of course I’m under pressure. But it doesn’t change my desire about doing the job.
‘I understand what everyone is saying and they are entitled to their opinions. Both myself and the players need to stand up to the criticism that we are inevitably going to take over the next few days.
‘I am hugely disappointed with the result. I understand the frustration of the fans. But they also need to be realistic. We had a very improvised back four that just simply couldn’t cope with the opposition on the day.
‘It’s not about spirit or anything psychological. It’s simply a case of Dundee being far too physically strong for us in the first half.
‘It was individuals not winning their own battles and not standing up to the physical challenge.
‘We are now in a group of clubs who are fighting relegation.
‘That is the reality of the situation we are in.’
