Nat gain adds up to a loss for Morton
MORTON suffered defeat in a competitive game at Cappielow for the first time in almost a year — and also had their slender hopes of mounting a title challenge to leaders Hibernian brought to a halt.
‘There are games you can play in and be unfortunate to lose. This was not one of them,’ said Greenock boss Jim Duffy.
‘Dunfermline deserved to win. We were not as sharp in any department. The performance was nowhere near the levels we have attained this season. This is an unforgiving league.’
Morton had the chance to take the lead after only seven minutes. Ross Forbes swung the ball over from a corner but Lee Kilday could not direct his header on target.
The Pars, who have had only four victories in their previous 14 meetings against Morton, then took the lead in the 16th minute.
Kallum Higginbotham fired over an outswinging corner, which was spilled by goalkeeper Derek Gaston. Nicky Clark was first to react and turned the ball back across for Nat Wedderburn to tap home from close in.
Wedderburn’s delight in scoring his first for the Pars, and only the fourth of his career, resulted in a booking for over-celebrating.
Dunfermline boss Allan Johnston said: ‘We had a determination to win the game and defended well. It was a massive win for us.’
